GEOGRAPHY: CENTRAL. NETWORKED. DIVERSE.

MÜNSTERLAND – A CITY AND REGION CLOSELY CONNECTED

The Münsterland region connects the City of Münster —as a regional hub—with the districts of Borken, Coesfeld, Steinfurt and Warendorf. Münster, as the regional hub, and the 65 cities and municipalities in the four districts together form a closely interconnected economic region with a population of approximately 1.6 million.

Urban centers, medium-sized towns, and rural areas are all located in close proximity here. This structure combines diverse locational advantages and offers space for businesses, people, and new developments. With an average population density of 273 inhabitants per square kilometer, the Münsterland is one of the comparatively less densely populated economic regions in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Excellent connections to national and European markets: Its geographic location in the immediate vicinity of the Netherlands and Lower Saxony, as well as its proximity to the Ruhr region, provide excellent connections to national and European markets. This strategically advantageous location makes the Münsterland an attractive site for companies across a wide range of industries.

Münsterland can do both

The largest cities in the region include

  • Münster (approx. 323,000 inhabitants),
  • Rheine (approx. 78,000 inhabitants),
  • Bocholt (approx. 73,000 inhabitants),
  • Ahlen (approx. 53,000 inhabitants) and Gronau (approx. 50,000 inhabitants).
  • Gronau (approx. 50,000 inhabitants).

Demographically, too, the Münsterland region stands out from other economic regions in North Rhine-Westphalia. According to current projections, the population will grow slightly until the mid-2030s and remain nearly stable in the long term. This means that the population trend is more favorable here than in any other economic region in North Rhine-Westphalia.

MÜNSTERLAND. THE GOOD LIFE.

Work, live, and stay.

In the Münsterland region, quality of life is an integral part of the area. Urban life, academia, and culture in Münster blend with vibrant towns and communities, plenty of open space, and a diverse landscape. City and countryside are close together, as are work, home, and leisure.

THE GOOD LIFE also reflects the way the region functions: collaboratively, energetically, and with short distances. People know one another, networks are close-knit, and much is achieved through cooperation. In this way, the Münsterland region combines economic opportunities with an environment where people enjoy living and working.

For companies, this is an important location factor—especially when it comes to attracting skilled workers to the region and retaining them in the long term.
